Forever intrigued by elements of the natural world, my art reflects my love for the textures and colors generously represented there—a way to visually articulate the appreciation I have for all nature gives.
The early stages of my work begin with the process of crushing rocks and other natural materials into useable pigment for paint making. It is exhausting, labor intensive, enjoyable work. Often, the amount of useable pigment I extract is quite small compared to the amount of materials I begin with, making them more valuable in their lack of abundance.
My intuitive approach to creating allows me to move through the stages of my process organically, allowing the materials to direct the feel of the piece. These earth pigments, when coupled with synthetics and mixed with washes of water, allow me to observe the relationship between all elements involved—how they blend and how they repel. My work has personally taught me lessons on patience and slowing down to be more aware of the current moment. It has also taught me to see beauty in the flawed and imperfect.
I desire to evoke within appreciators of my work the feeling of being grounded and present in their surroundings. Feeling rooted allows space for calmness, peace and intention to flourish.
